On August 8, 2026, The League of Women Voters and partners will host a nationwide day of civic action in honor of the anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
The League of Women Voters of Leelanau County encourages all to take time out on that day to watch the short documentary, "Three Marches, Two Sisters, One Bridge." You can stream the movie here.
"Three Marches, Two Sisters, One Bridge" is a civil rights documentary that shares the personal stories of two sisters who served as Foot Soldiers during the historic 1965 voting rights marches in Selma, Alabama. The film chronicles their experiences with discrimination, threats, and violence while fighting for civil rights. The documentary, produced in partnership with the League of Women Voters, highlights the sisters' crucial role in fighting for the fundamental right to vote.
August 6th is the 61st anniversary of the passage of the Voting Rights Act (VRA) of 1965. The VRA is one of the most significant election statutes ever enacted. The law prohibits discrimination based on race, color, or language-minority status in registration and voting nationwide. The VRA also provides protections for blind, disabled, or illiterate voters.
The VRA is under attack. On April 29, the Supreme Court issued its opinion in Callais. In a 6-3 ruling, the Court weakened Section 2 of the VRA to the point of inoperability. This sends a clear message to the nation: racial discrimination in redistricting is acceptable when done under the guise of partisan gerrymandering. The ruling has greenlit the destruction of voters of color’s main tool for challenging racially discriminatory voting practices. This has led to a frenzied redrawing of congressional voting district maps.
LRV and partners have organized many activities to support voting rights for this Unite & Rise Day of Action. Take a moment to witness the story of two sisters who had the courage to step up and fight for the right to vote.
